This week in theatre rounds up the most noteworthy live theatre playing right now in Toronto. It includes just-opened shows as well as productions that are about to close.

Clouds Over TO / Guild Festival Theatre / 7:30pm/2:00pm / $20
The Guild Inn and Gardens set atop the Scarborough Bluffs in Toronto's east end are the setting for the Guild Festival Theatre. It's arguably the prettiest venue for summer theatre in the city. With the endorsement of acclaimed director Robin Phillips, the festival launched their inaugural season last summer with Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. This year, they've gone off the beaten path with a new work called Clouds Over TO, a musical with original songs by David Buchbinder based on The Clouds by Greek comedian Aristophanes.

Speed-the-Plow / Soulpepper - Young Centre / 8:00pm/2:00pm / $22-$68
Few subjects have so captured North American preoccupations like that of Hollywood, the town where the pictures became big time business. In David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow, one of the our most important playwrights pulls back the veneer to explore its bottom lines. Where profit prospers, integrity falls by the wayside. Directed by David Storch, the play features Ari Cohen, Jordan Pettle and Sarah Wilson.

Mr. Marmalade / Holy Family Catholic Church School / 7:30pm / $10-$20
A bona fide hit at Summerworks 2011, Mr. Marmalade is a play about a four year old named Lucy who has an abusive relationship with her imaginary friend, a violent, sex-obsessed drug addict. That's not all, it's performed inside an elementary school classroom. Come September, little tots will fill the homeroom with laughter and snacks, but until then, the site-specific piece will invite audience members to sit among the small chairs and artwork on the walls.

Porch View Dances (84 London Street) / Seaton Village / 7:00pm/2:00pm / PWYC
In Porch View Dances, community members work with five professional choreographers to create innovative outdoor performances of contemporary dance. Audiences will be toured around the Seaton Village neighbourhood to visit each of the dance pieces and will then be led to Vermont Square Park for the Flock Landing finale. Porch View will also invite up to 60 youth at-risk to reinterpret dance through film.

War Horse / Princess of Wales Theatre / 7:30pm/1:30pm / $29-$100+
If you haven't yet seen the horsey epic, what are you waiting for? War Horse is a rare piece of theatre — it's an inspiring story between a young boy and his horse told using mechanisms of theatre that showcase the best of the art form.The Handspring Puppet Company has crafted living and breathing horses that stand at the emotional core of the drama. If there was any doubt that the magic could be replicated with an all Canadian cast, they can be put to rest with the production now on stage.
