The top 5 unusual places to do yoga in Toronto

Yoga feels like a national pastime in Toronto with no shortage of studios and retreats available in the GTA. But, if you're looking for something different in a casual and offbeat atmosphere, there's at least a few options for you to do yoga that aren't convential studios. And the best part, most of the classes are free.

Here's a list of unusual places to do yoga in Toronto.

AGO
What better way to feel inspired than by mixing art with yoga. The AGO has one hour drop-in and membership classes available in its Galleria Italia three times a week. Classes are held Mondays at 6-7 p.m, Thursdays 8-9 a.m. and Sundays 10:15-11.15 a.m. Experience calm and quiet amongst the beautiful collections of the AGO while the gallery is closed to the public.

Evergreen Brickworks
The Evergreen Brickworks offers more than just an extensive weekend market. Here you can take Hatha Yoga classes that focus on posture and breathing techniques. The classes are taught by instructor Victoria Fodor who's been involved in yoga for 15 years. The classes run on Wednesdays and Sundays and cost $15 for a drop in, $13 for pre registration or you can purchase a 10 class stamp card for $100. They have upwards of a dozen mats, so if you can't bring your own they will likely have one to borrow for free.

Yoga in The Park: Various Locations
On Tuesdays, holistic nutritionist Gillian B offers free classes at Trinity Bellwoods Park starting at 6.30 p.m. Bring your own yoga mat and meet at the entrance of the park on Queen West. Yoga is also offered at Bayview Village Park for free Saturdays at 10.30 a.m. The meetup is weather permitting, and if you RSVP ahead of time, you can also request a yoga mat, but it's best to bring your own.

Yoga at MEC stores
MEC holds regular Yoga jams inside its King Street store. The classes are completely free to the public and held before the store opens. The classes take place in the upper level "racetrack" part of the retail space. Classes are usually held Sundays from 9 - 10 a.m. and open to the first 50 people. You don't need to register ahead of time.

Yoga in the Library
Indulge your love of reading with your love of yoga. Yoga and meditation classes are held at various Toronto Public Libraries across Toronto ranging from a 90- minute Kundalini Yoga at the Annette Street library (from May to June) to Restorative Meditation at Brentwood Public Library. The classes are free and led by certified yoga teachers, so feel free to drop in during any of the available times.
