MUSIC | Oh Land @ The Great Hall
Oh Land, aka Nanna Øland Fabricius, hits TO tonight for a show at The Great Hall. This Brooklyn-based, Danish born singer/songwriter is touring her latest release, Wish Bone, produced by herself, UK producer Dan Carey, and TV On The Radio's David Andrew Sitek. Both Spin magazine, and The New Yorker's Press Play blog have featured tracks from the album in support. Oh Land's sound definitely leans toward the poppier side of things, with electronic elements and tightly crafted production supporting her unique vocals.
The Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West) 8PM $15

FILM | Early Monthly Segments #55, Takahiko Iimura IN PERSON
Early Monthly Segments, Toronto's favourite monthly screening of vintage and contemporary experimental films in their original format, returns tonight to the Gladstone Hotel. This evening, experimental Japanese film maker, Takahiko Iimura will be featured. One of Iimura's first films, Onan, was the recipient of the Special Prize at the 1964 Brussels International Independent Film Festival. His lengthy career has found him working in both New York and Tokyo. Along with Onan, his films Kuzu, Ai, and others that feature collaborations with Japanese composers Yoko Ono, Takehisa Kosugi, and Yasunao Tone, will be shown tonight.
Gladstone Hotel, 2nd Floor Gallery (1214 Queen Street West) 8PM PWYC ($5-10 suggested donation)

FOOD | Origin Liberty JAM
They say that variety is the spice of life, and that's what makes tasting menus so much delicious fun. Tonight at Origin, you will be presented not only with a tasty variety of dishes, but a variety of "creators," too. Four chefs - Andrew Wilson, formerly of Colborne Lane (which was owned by the owner of Origin, Claudio Aprile), Aaron Hallam of Geraldine, Guy Rawlings, of Bar Isabel (where he's actually the manager, not a chef, curiously enough), and Kevin Gilmour, sous chef at The Drake Hotel - will prepare a tasting menu that you will likely still be thinking about fondly at breakfast tomorrow morning. There are two seatings, one at six o'clock, and one at nine. Bon appetit!
Origin Liberty Village (171 East Liberty Street) 6PM or 9PM seatings $89

FILM | Tohoku Movie Night: Departures
A screening tonight of director Yojiro Takita's 2008 film, Departures at The Japan Foundation on Bloor West. This is part of a Tohoku Movie Night series that has also included the work of Shohei Imamura and Shinobu Yaguchi. Departures tells the story of a young cellist, who returns to his hometown following the collapse of his orchestra, and unknowingly accepts a job offer for a position that turns out to be that of mortician, and this causes him to be somewhat alienated from his friends and community.
The Japan Foundation (131 Bloor Street West) 7PM FREE (RSVP required)
