Radar: David Byrne, Art Battle 34, Peter Gabriel, Little Terrors, No Great Mischief

BOOKS & LIT | AUTHORS: David Byrne
TO is blessed with a healthy dose of David Byrne this week! The former Talking Heads frontman and Eno collaborator plays tomorrow night with St. Vincent at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, but tonight he will be chatting with Cory Doctorow about his book How Music Works, as part of the Authors at Harbourfront Centre series. This non-fiction piece had been in the works for quite a while, and its first chapter is largely based on Byrne's TED lecture from a year or two ago, with a sizeable dose of autobiography used to explain how music teaches us about our culture and ourselves. There will be an audience Q & A with Byrne following the discussion.
Authors at Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay West) 7:30PM $25 (students/members/youth $20)

ART | Art Battle 34
Art Battle returns to The Great Hall tonight to launch its fourth season. This event is all about "live competitive painting," and if you think 'art' is not competitive, guess again! Sixteen painters will go canvas-to-canvas in twenty-minute rounds using acrylic paint, brushes, and their choice of "non-mechanical implements." The winner of each round is decided by an audience vote, and a silent auction to procure the work will take place. Art Battle is an event that proves to be very entertaining, so much so that it has expanded its horizons to include Vancouver, Ottawa, Halifax and Montreal competitions. Check it out tonight!
The Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West) 7:30PM $20 ($10 students)

MUSIC | Peter Gabriel
Peter Gabriel returns to TO tonight! The man who rose to fame as the lead singer of Genesis, and later broke through commercially in a huge way with the multi-award-winning album So is still going strong. His interest in world music led to the founding of his label Real World, and the WOMAD festival, and he has also had an active association with Amnesty International. With the success of last year's New Blood tour, that found orchestral arrangements breathing new life into some of his greatest material, Gabriel returns with Back To Front: a tour devoted to the album So, which will be played in its entirety this evening.
Air Canada Centre (40 Bay Street) 8PM $50 - $190

FILM | Rue Morgue & Unstable Ground present Little Terrors Vol. 11 - Resurrection
Little Terrors, a monthly film screening of horror short films, happens tonight at its new location: the Carleton Cinema, presented in conjunction with Rue Morgue Magazine. Two hours of gruesome, terrifying, and macabre shorts will be screened. Titles include Through the Night by director Lee Cronin, The Congregation by director Michael Foulke, Animal by director Ross Peacock, and many more. There will be a Q & A following the screening and a chance to meet some of the filmmakers.
Carlton Cinema (20 Carlton Street) 9PM
