BOOKS & LIT | AUTHORS: Gloria Vanderbilt
Tonight, the Authors at Harbourfront series continues with a special Monday event, featuring reading and conversation with acclaimed author Gloria Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt has lived in the public eye from her earliest years, and the battle between her aunt and mother for her custody made headlines in the mid 1930's. She has been through several marriages, and has endured several notable family tragedies. Despite this, Vanderbilt has had a well-respected career in the worlds of acting, fashion and literature, and is still at it in her late eighties! Tonight she will read from her latest, "The Things We Fear Most": a collection of short stories that celebrates those moments in life, that contain disaster and beauty. Writer and journalist Siri Agrell will interview the author.

FILM | EARLY MONTHLY SEGMENTS #40 = Marie Menken + Ute Aurand
Early Monthly Segments is a monthly series that present Toronto film enthusiasts and students with an opportunity to see very rare experimental and underground cinema in its proper context: a screening. Tonight Marie Menken's silent film "The Gravediggers of Guadix" will be screened. Marie Menken was an experimental New York filmmaker who co-founded the avant garde circle The Gryphno Group with her husband, Willard Maas. She also had a strong association with Andy Warhol's, and appeared in a few of his films, as well. Ute Aurand and Ulrike Pfeiffer's 1988 film " OH! die vier Jahreszeiten" will also be screened, which finds the German filmmakers in celebration of the changing of the seasons in four different cities: Berlin, Moscow, Paris, and London.

MUSIC | Deer Tick @ Lee's Palace
Providence, Rhode Island's Deer Tick hits Lee's Palace tonight. This country-tinged band evolved from founder John McCauley's early songwriting attempts and was officially named when he discovered a tick on his head during a camping trip. This group has found great success and has a considerable body of work, but also perform cover tunes quite regularly as part of their live sets. Their sound is often built on a foundation of guitar hooks and patterns, with other elements like strings or keyboards occasionally sweetening the arrangements, and McCauley's irreverent vocals (which often evoke Dylan, Roky Erickson and others) at the centre of the action. Novaks and Turbo Fruits are also on tonight's bill. Should be good!

BOOKS & LIT | Rowers Pub Reading Series
Just when we thought we had heard the last of the Rower's Pub Reading Series until October... There's one more night of literary fun! This special reading event is called The Rower's Team Reading, and will feature Sue Bowness, Ian Burgham, David Clink, Kate Dawson, Catherine Graham, Ned Hagerman, Megan Swaine, Halli Villegas, and Heather Wood. A special bonus is that you get to check out the new venue for the 2012-3 season: The Victory Cafe. One might wonder if this change will be the catalyst for a new moniker for the event... We'll have to wait and see.
