FILM | Images Festival Encore Screening: The Nine Muses by John Akomfrah
Reworking the documentary film is John Akomfrah's goal as he uses the tale of Homer's Odyssey to explore migration, exile and the definition of home in The Nine Muses. The opening night gala film at the 2012 Images Festival, tonight's screening at The Royal is a one-night-only revisiting of Akomfrah's work about Caribbean and African migrants in 1950s Britain. The film contains readings of literary greats layered over 35mm archival images of The Windrush Generation in this poetic film that was one of the festival's most popular this year. Tickets are available in person at The Royal.

BOOZE | Canadian Beer News Dinner Series
Craft beer and food lovers unite to learn, dine and drink at tonight's instalment of the Canadian Beer News Dinner Series. Craft beer bar Smokeless Joe plays host to the series event tonight with a North American Craft portfolio tasting, featuring samples of beers from small breweries across Ontario, such as Black Oak, Denison's and Wellington. Smokeless Joe will be serving a four-course meal--complete with their famous mussels--and each course will come with plenty of complementary pairings. FILM | The Day After Peace
Filmmaker Jeremy Gilley just wants one day of peace. Choosing the date of September 21st, the remarkable award-winning filmmaker embarks on a mission to establish one day of peace in his documentary The Day After Peace. We follow Jeremy as he works to persuade--and ultimately win over--the UN to establish an international day of ceasefire with the help of global peacemakers and UN ambassadors like the Dalai Lama, Kofi Annan and Angelina Jolie. Jeremy Gilley will speak after the screening to discuss how his efforts have resulted in a reduction of violent incidents in some war torn countries. $10 from the sale of each ticket will go to the Peace One Day Organization.

BOOKS & LIT | Ali Kazimi's "Undesirables" Book Launch
Revisiting an unfortunate event in Canada's history in his new book "Undesirables," filmmaker and author Ali Kazimi tells the story of how, in May 1914, Canadian immigration turned away 376 Indian immigrants aboard the Komagata Maru, resulting in a two-month stand-off that forced them back to their homeland, where many were killed. Kazimi delves into the deeper, historical matters in his work--which launches tonight at the Gladstone--in order to reveal the tension between Canada's desire for homogeny and the British empire's need for stability. Examining the relevance to Canada's current immigration framework, "Undesirables" paints a picture of the tension aboard the ship through illustrations of the events that took place in the Vancouver harbour 100 years ago. Admission is free with the purchase of the book and Kazimi will participate in an interview and Q&A with law professor Audrey Macklin.
