FILM | The Diaspora Travels: Haiti's Displacement Camps
The Black/African/Caribbean Diaspora, a North American collective, has traveled to Port au Prince, Haiti to examine the ongoing struggles of those who slipped by international aid efforts after the debilitating January 12th, 2010 earthquake. Screening tonight at Walnut Studios, the Diaspora--all of whom have roots in Haiti or the Caribbean--examines what has been left undone in this interactive documentary. Traveling and meeting Haitians through their personal networks, the collective examines the lives of those in displacement camps as they continue to rebuild. The screening will be followed by a Skype conference with the Diaspora team that consists of Malinda Francis, Michel Dessouces Jr. and Oja Vincent.

ART | 'Sick!' Exhibition Opening
Revealing the misuse of the term in today's lexicon, Toronto painters Dessa Harhay and Amy Wong bring 'Sick!', their latest exhibition, to The White House Gallery tonight. The exhibit features works that detail the division between the word's original meaning with the position it has taken in current slang, examining the positive or negative implications of each use of the term. There will be live music from DJ Ambulance Wolf and Parent-Teacher Night at the opening and the exhibition will continue until May 20th.

CULTURE | (Un)Lawful Access? Cyber-surveillance, Security & Civil Liberties
As part of the Social Science and Humanities Research Council's latest research project " The New Transparency: Surveillance and Social Sorting," tonight's discussion will examine the issues of privacy in the digital age. Panelists will engage in dialogue about the problems surrounding corporate information gathering, data mining and other pressing security issues, such as the effects of cyber-surveillance on democracy. Panelists will include six experts, including Jacob Applebaum of the Tor Project and the evening's moderator Dr. Ron Deibert, who lead the U of T Munk School team that uncovered a global espionage network last year.

ART | The Geometry of Light Photo Exhibit Launch
Israeli photographer, philosopher and author Pierre Poulain brings his photographic exhibit, The Geometry of Light, to the Centre for Social Innovation tonight in celebration of the upcoming UNESCO World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. The exhibit, which features photographs from around the world, emphasizes multiculturalism under the cast of different lights, all with the purpose of uniting humanity. The artist will be in attendance to open the event with introductory words.

FILM | "DEATH or CANADA" Screening
The docudrama "DEATH or CANADA," about the plight of Irish immigrants leaving their native country for Toronto in the mid-1800s, will be screened tonight at the Enoch Turner Schoolhouse, Toronto's oldest free schoolhouse. This Gemini-nominated film is a joint venture between Canadian and Irish filmmakers detailing Canada's intake of 38,000 Irish immigrants who left Ireland during the famine of 1847. The dramatic re-telling of the mass exodus will be followed by a discussion with historian Dr. Mark McGowan and Associate Producer Daniel Thomson.
