CLUBS | STANDARDS! First Anniversary Party
This club night is a monthly thing and it has "Standards"! Unofficially put together as a protest against the abundance of mediocrity passing for both specialized and eclectic "club nights" in the city, Standards! has a vinyl-only policy, and has a very carefully curated playlist every time, having been founded by established DJs and record collectors with more than an ounce of cred. The musical selection draws from the many worlds of "real Rock 'n' Roll": punk, ska, Northern Soul, '50s R'n'B, and more. No musical cliches, and no iPods allowed! Come and find out why this is one of the most popular nights going!

ART | Shastri Maharaj at Spence Gallery
Trinidadian artist, Shastri Maharaj, will showcase a collection of acrylic paintings at this exhibition that opens this evening. Caribean culture and landscape pervade Maharaj's paintings, and he claims that "the Spiritual" is behind all of his work. Themes such as "silence, emptiness, [and] apathy" manifest themselves on various scales, as does iconography from both Hinduism and Christianity.

MUSIC | Roy Hargrove @ Koerner Hall
Roy Hargrove plays at Koerner Hall this evening, concluding the "Aspects Of Oscar" series. Hargrove came to the attention of the jazz world in the early '90s as part of the "young lions" movement, which also heralded the mainstream attention of folks like Harry Connick Jr, and Joshua Redman. Hargrove is the winner of two Grammy Awards, and brings a stellar lineup to Koerner Hall this evening, including bassist Christian McBride, pianist George Cables, and saxophonist Ralph Moore. It will swing hard!

MUSIC | Canadian Songwriters' Hall of Fame Gala
The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame is an organization founded in order to celebrate and spread the word about the great musical heritage of this country. Our songwriters continue to influence and enrich the music of other regions, and many would be surprised how many 'foreign' hits have been penned by writers from Canada! At tonight's awards gala, you'll catch performances by Daniel Lanois, Wintersleep, and more!

FUNDRAISER | Toronto Bands Together For Tsunami Relief
More music to the rescue! Several Toronto groups have come together to raise some funds to help the folks affected by the events in Fukushima, at a new venue in the College and Bathurst area, No One Writes to the Colonel. Participating acts include: The Jessica Stuart Few, Shelley O'Brien, Graydon James and The Young Novelists, and more. All door money, which is pay-what-you-can (with a five dollar suggested donation), goes to the Canadian Red Cross' relief efforts.

FILM | Toronto Silent Film Festival presents A THOUSAND LAUGHS
The humourously-titled "Roach Clips" will screen this afternoon: a collection of hilarious shorts by famous Golden Age producer Hal Roach. Favourites such as Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang, Charley Chase, Max Davidson, and Anita Garvin with Edgar Kennedy, will come back to life on the big screen where they belong. True to the era, there will be musical accompaniment by pianist Andrei Streliaev.

MUSIC | The Greenhornes + Hacienda @ The Horsehoe
Cincinnati rockers, The Greenhornes, hit The Horseshoe tonight to lay down some badass garage vibes. These guys have been at it since 1996, and have had their music used in some cool places, such as an episode of The Sopranos, and a PS2/XBox Game, as well. Two of the band's members, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, have been members of Jack White's successful The Raconteurs project, and also White's 'throw together' backup band for Loretta Lynn, The Do-Whaters. Hacienda gets the party started.

WORKSHOP | Easter Egg Workshop: Save The World Make Pysanky
A very cool workshop goes down this morning at Site3. Pysanka is the Ukranian art, or tradition of 'decorating' eggs with specific designs that can be found in this culture. The material used to decorate these eggs is coloured dyes, and beeswax is also applied, using a wax resist method very similar to batik. After an initial design application of beeswax, drawn on with a stylus of some sort, the egg is then dyed and another dye is applied. The beeswax designs seal in each dye layer, in addition to the inital "white" layer. Get your pysanky chops honed today, and then get cracking on some great homemade Easter gifts you can share!
