THEATRE | Toronto Fringe Festival
The way some festivals unfold in this city (CMW, anyone?) you'd think they were unjuried, but the Toronto Fringe Festival is the only one that truly throws open its doors to all comers. Productions are chosen completely at random and organizers don't interfere with any artistic content. Not only does Fringe provide an audience for new works, 100% of the proceeds also go straight to the artists. Over the years the festival has been the starting point for such hits as Trey Anthony's Da Kink in My Hair and Charles Ross's One Man Lord of the Rings, and it's a safe bet there are some gems among the 150 performances happening at 27 venues across the city this year. Trying to pick a must-see show in an unjuried festival is a bit like trying to pick the winner of a three-legged horse race, but we've done our best. FESTIVAL | Redpath Toronto Waterfront Festival
Haul your landlubbin' ass down to the lakefront today to watch the arrival of 15 historic sailboats as part of the Redpath Toronto Waterfront Festival. The fleet of tall ships is the largest to visit Toronto since 1994, and our harbour is the first port of call in a race that will see the ships speed to five different cities in the Great Lakes. Over the next five days visitors to the festival will have the chance to tour the decks of the ships, as well as take in music, live entertainment, and fresh-cooked food on shore. The festival's educational component, called the Great Lakes United Green Village, will provide insight at the workings of the world's largest freshwater ecosystem, and on July 4 the ships leave Toronto in a ceremonial Parade of Sail. Runs til Sunday.

PARTY | Jetsetter International Pride Party
The big Pride party on Sunday will be hard to miss as it turns Yonge Street into a giant rainbow parade, but tonight's Pride bash is tucked away by the railroad tracks just east of Parkdale. The 99 Sudbury club plays host to an airline-themed party featuring DJs from around the world including San Fran's Kidd Sysko, LA's Saratonin, and our own Barbi and our own Le Freak C'est Keek. Sysko and Saratonin are favourites at the notorious Dinah Shore lesbian getaway weekends, and will be using their scandalous beats to propel you directly into the biggest party weekend of the summer.

FILM | Summer Movie Night: Breakfast with Scot
Either none of those athletes we watch grapple, tackle, and ass-slap each other out on the playing field on a weekly basis are gay, or there are a hell of a lot of closeted sports stars out there. Pro sports as the last bastion of homophobia in North American culture is an issue addressed with humour and compassion in Breakfast with Scot, a 2007 Canadian film about a retired gay hockey player who unexpectedly becomes the guardian of young boy. The Toronto Maple Leafs, whose general manager Brian Burke famously supported his son's decision to come out, lent the use of their logo for the movie's on-ice scenes. We may not be winning any trophies but we're certainly racking up those moral victories, boys! The film screens tonight as the Pride edition of the Toronto International Film Festival's outdoor Summer Movie Night series in the heart of the city.

PARTY | Mr. Scruff at Wrongbar
Queen West hotspot Wrongbar welcomes Mancunian cartoonist and DJ Mr. Scruff tonight. Scruff has revolutionized the British trip-hop scene over the past decade with his summery, meandering singles but also takes time out from music to run his own tea company (Englishmen are required by law to own a tea company). If his marathon sets (which often exceed six hours) weren't enough evidence of the amount of energy this guy has, he's also an accomplished visual artist whose quirky cartoons adorn his album covers, merchandise, and such esteemed periodicals as Jockey Slut. No danger of Mr. Scruff going over time tonight; no doubt Councillor Gordon Perks will make sure the club is shuttered tight by 2 am.
