FILM | Guy Maddin at Innis Town Hall
Starting tonight, Innis Town Hall presents four nights of film by Canadian auteur Guy Maddin. Maddin himself will be in attendance for each event, giving audiences a chance to get to know the filmmaker who's often referred to as the Canadian David Lynch. Things kick off tonight with May I Blow My Bugle Now? My Life in Clips, an illustrated lecture by Maddin on his favourite films and major influences. As with all events at Innis, it's completely free and seating is first come first serve. Runs til Friday.

THEATRE | Whiskey Bars
Bremner Duthie returns to Toronto with his one-man Fringe hit Whiskey Bars featuring songs by Kurt Weil. The entire action of the play takes place in nightclub dressing room where a washed up cabaret singer awaits what could be his final performance. Joined by the only critic who could be convinced to show up, the singer tries everything he can to ensure he gets a good review, including lies, seduction, and begging. Tonight's a preview of the show's run that begins on Jan. 19.

MUSIC | Owen Pallett at the Mod Club
The artist formerly known as Final Fantasy celebrates the release of his third record Heartland tonight with a show at the Mod Club. There's probably no artist more beloved by the Canadian music press at the moment, and with Pallett's multi-instrumental talent it's no wonder. Diamond Rings will open in what is probably the John O'Regan project's biggest show to date. It's technically sold out but it's such a hot ticket there's bound to be some scalpers out.

POETRY | Art Bar Discovery Night
I'm not sure what you'd call this event, but I think it's a poetry-off. Local poets who have never been featured at Toronto's longest-running poetry series Art Bar have the chance tonight to read their works in front of an audience in a tournament format. The audience will vote after each poem to decide who gets to go on to the next round. The winner after three rounds gets a showcase reading at an Art Bar event in April.

BOOKS AND LIT | One on One with Grant McCracken
In an era where trends pop up quicker than you can say "tweet", shouldn't companies be keeping a close eye on what will be the next big thing? That's the premise behind Grant McCracken's new book Chief Cultural Officer, in which he argues that every corporation could use a cultural anthropologist on its board to predict shifts in culture. It's a handy argument for him, because he just happens to be a cultural anthropologist himself. That's how bad the economy is folks, you're gonna have to write a book if you want to get a job. McCracken comes to the Indigo flagship store today for a book signing and interview with Indigo's CEO Heather Reisman.
