David Crombie endorses Smitherman

David Crombie, Toronto's former "tiny, perfect mayor," has endorsed George Smitherman for mayor.

The announcement was made this morning, as Smitherman added that Crombie would serve as special advisor on community hubs if he is elected mayor. "I think the next four years is not just an average time for us," Crombie said. "The next four years is something that we really need to go at. We need to make sure that we've got some economic growth because we've been slipping."

Crombie would not comment on Rob Ford's campaign, but said that "People should not vote out of fear -- they should vote for positive reasons."

Crombie was Toronto's mayor from 1972 to 1978 and later became a federal Tory cabinet minister.
