City Hall severance packages total $1.2 million

The 14 exiting City Hall politicians will receive severance packages totaling $1.2 million, possibly to be paid out in gravy.

Thirteen councillors, along with outgoing mayor David Miller, will receive one month of pay for every year served in office to a maximum of 12 months. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CFT) released the estimated total yesterday.

CTF Federal Director Kevin Gaudet is urging the city to establish a citizen's panel to set council pay. "In the private sector when you quit or are fired with cause you don't get severance at all," he said in a statement.
