Emery Village one step closer to giant flagpole

Finally, Toronto can show face with those jerks in Athens and their largest container of body cream.

After an executive committee vote today, Emery Village is one step closer to erecting the tallest flagpole on the continent. The committee unanimously backed a proposal to build a 125-metre pole bearing a Canadian flag the size of a football field.

The Emery Village BIA has agreed to chip in for the estimated $3.5 million pole slated for a vacant lot near Finch Avenue West and Highway 400. The BIA has also promised to foot land purchasing and upkeep costs.

Full council still needs to approve the proposal. If all goes "well," former mayoral candidate and standing city councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, who has been championing the project, predicts the pole will be erected July 2011.
