Bell Lightbox to open with free block party

The TIFF Bell Lightbox will be hosting a free block party to celebrate its opening on September 12.

The party will kick off at 11 a.m. with a performance by Los Angeles funk/rock band 100 Monkeys. Then, after the official ribbon cutting ceremony, admission to the new building on King between John and Peter will be free.

Shortlisted Polaris Music Prize bands will also perform, including Karkwa, The Sadies and Radio Radio. Fefe Dobson (remember her?!) will also take the stage, along with a cryptic "special guest" to be announced September 11. Toronto's Joy of Dance Studio will perform as well.

On the food front there will be free cupcakes supplied by Madeleines Cherry Pie and Ice Cream. And of course, what would a block party be without a movie star look-alike contest? Time to channel some of that Mel Gibson crazy.

Screenings will take place until 4 p.m., as well as "Family Fun Zone" activities in celebration of The Wizard of Oz.
