Torontonians in favour of pedestrian tunnel to Island Airport

The results of an Ipsos-Reid survey show that a majority of Torontonians (56 per cent) are in favour of a pedestrian tunnel to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. (That's 56 per cent of 700 randomly surveyed.)

Passengers flying out of Billy Bishop now have to take a 90-second ferry ride to the island. The proposed underwater tunnel would serve in addition to the existing ferry.

Back in January, the Toronto Port Authority (TPA) estimated the tunnel will cost approximately $45 million, to be covered by airline improvement fees paid by flying customers. The tunnel would be about eight metres wide and four metres high, and be outfitted with moving sidewalks.

The TPA is currently undertaking an environmental assessment of the project.
