toronto blackout july 2010

Power out in many areas across Toronto

A number of areas across Toronto are currently experiencing power outages. CP24 reports that smoke can be seen rising from a electrical transformer in the the Kipling and Bloor area, which Toronto Hydro suspects is the cause of the widespread problem.

Subway service is down between Jane and Kipling stations on the Bloor-Danforth subway line, though shuttle buses are running.

Reports indicate that power is out as far east as Ajax and throughout much of the west end.

Apparently the Royal entourage has been caught in the outage as well. How's that for urban democracy?

Toronto Hydro Electric is trying to post a map on their web site that gives an idea where power is on/off, but it seems that their web infrastructure is failing too!

I'll do my best to spread more information when I have it (and when I get off this mobile device, which is a huge pain to type on!).

In the meantime, follow for citizens and media reports on Twitter via the #darkto or #blackoutto tags.
