As we mentioned this morning, G20 security barriers are being erected around the Metro Toronto Convention Centre today to separate the gawkers from the gawkees (or police from protesters; leaders from the masses).

The 10-foot chain link fences will give Toronto a "homey" feel for summit visitors. Nothing says "welcome" like 5 km of steel.

"We're not disclosing (the locations) for security reasons, but they will be up and ready on time," Const. Wendy Drummond said to the Toronto Sun. "They will continue to go up until they are complete. What it's going to look like, if you bring your mind to other events that fences are erected for public safety, such as the Honda Indy, these are similar."

To reinforce this cozy, safe feeling evoked by the chain fences, organizers are considering renaming pat-downs "hug 'n' feels," and resurrecting Quatchi, the Vancouver 2010 mascot, to stand and wave at security checkpoints.
