Hot Ticket: Gomez, Girl in a Coma, Johnny Corndawg, Sam Roberts Band, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Jezabels, Dan Vapid and the Cheats

Live music picks for MONDAY JULY 23 through SATURDAY JULY 28, 2012.

MONDAY JULY 23 / GOMEZ / THE MOD CLUB / 722 COLLEGE / $35.75 / 19+

You really have to respect a band that's been together for over 15 years and, during that time, has kept the original lineup together. It's a rarity, but Gomez, out of England, have not only managed to do it, they've also managed to gain a rabid fanbase and consistent critical acclaim. They released their seventh LP, Whatever's On Your Mind, last year, so you can probably expect to hear a fair bit of material off of it. Quiet Corral will open.

TUESDAY JULY 24 / GIRL IN A COMA / THE GARRISON/ 1197 DUNDAS W / $13.50 - $15 / 19+

I can't remember the last time a band with an all-female lineup was featured in the Hot Ticket, but now's as good a time as any. San Antonio's Girl in a Coma is an indie-rock trio comprised of sisters Nina and Phanie Diaz, and their friend Jenn Alva. Together since 2005, these ladies have accomplished a fair bit in a short time, and even got to tour with Morrissey in 2007. That, right there, is no small feat. Black Box Revelation will offer support.

WEDNESDAY JULY 25 / JOHNNY CORNDAWG / LEE'S PALACE / 529 BLOOR W / $11.50 - $13 / 19+

This one might not appeal to a lot of you, but I definitely think it's worth checking out. Johnny Corndawg is a relatively new country artist out of Nashville who has quietly been making waves in the country music scene. His songs are, for the most part, tongue-in-cheek throwbacks to the corny country music of the 1970s, with titles such as "When a Ford Man Turns to Chevy" and "Silver Panty Liners." If you go into this knowing what to expect, I reckon you're in for a good time.

THURSDAY JULY 26 / SAM ROBERTS BAND / ECHO BEACH / 909 LAKESHORE W / $53.75 / ALL AGES

If you've never seen Sam Roberts live, you really owe it to yourself to check this show out. I've only seen the man live once, at last September's Festival Music House, and it was nothing short of awesome. His stage presence is something to behold, and his music is consistently catchy and listenable. Roberts and his band are probably one of the most beloved acts in Canada today, and for good reason. The openers, Bombay Bicycle Club and The Jezabels, make this a can't-miss show.

SATURDAY JULY 28 / DAN VAPID AND THE CHEATS / HORSESHOE TAVERN/ 368 QUEEN W / $10 - $12 / 19+

We'll finish off this week's Hot Ticket with a little bit of good ol' fashioned punk. Dan Vapid, previously a member of the legendary (and infamous) band Screeching Weasel, formed this new band and cut an album in 2011. It's pretty standard punk-rock fare, but if you're a fan of the genre or Vapid's previous body of work, it'll be right up your alley.
