The Neighbourhood Mixtape: We're Counting on You

The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: Eight and a Half, "What's in it for me"

Eight and a Half covers

Track #2: Teenage Kicks ft. Meaghan Pearce, "The Partisan"

Visit Herohill and download The Bard of Montreal - a tribute album for legendary poet and musician Leonard Cohen. Twenty-five Canadian artists from coast to coast were asked to record their favourite Cohen tune, and we're featuring one of them: Teenage Kicks' bluesy rendition of "The Partisan".

Track #3: Badbadnotgood, "Limit to Your Love"

Feist's piano ballad "Limit to Your Love" gets a jazzy/hip-hop touch up from BBNG, one of the band's innovative and creative instrumentals taken from their new LP, which you can download for free here.

Track #4: Daniel Duff, "Landmark"

Daniel Duff's muted "Landmark" transports you with its distant loops of loose strings and inescapable melancholy. Download the instrumental for free here.

Track #5: Great Lake Swimmers, "The Great Exhale"

Great Lake Swimmers' newest album New Wild Everywhere was released this past week. For those who may still need a little convincing on this record, just listen to or download the lush and pristine "The Great Exhale" - one of the band's most inspired moments on the album.
