Live Music Toronto

Hot Ticket: Hey Rosetta!, Gramercy Riffs, The Head and the Heart, The Wilderness of Manitoba, The Treasures, Tennis, Holiday Shore, Motorhead, Clutch, Valient Thorr, Smith Westerns and Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Live music picks for WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 23 through TUESDAY MARCH 1, 2011.

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 23 / HEY ROSETTA! / LEE'S PALACE / 529 BLOOR ST W / SOLD-OUT / 19+
St. John's, Newfoundland indie pop collective Hey Rosetta! returns to Lee's Palace for a two-night show on Wednesday and Thursday to promote their new record Seeds - an album CHARTattack hails as one where the band has "found their voice." Their 2008 LP Into Your Lungs (and around in your heart, and on through your blood) took home Album of the Year at the Verge Music Awards and was also shortlisted for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize. Concert reviewers describe their shows as gripping and high-energy, so be prepared to look for extra tickets. Opening will be locals Gramercy Riffs.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 24 / THE HEAD AND THE HEART / HORSESHOE TAVERN / 368 QUEEN ST W / $10.50 / 19+
The Head and the Heart have been deemed Seattle's next big band. Their 2010 self-titled LP became a favourite of KEXP - Seattle and Washington's local public radio station. The album was re-released earlier this year after the band signed with Sub Pop!. Their album consists of soft ballads and fun sing-a-longs, packed with guitars, piano, violin and orchestral elements. Toronto folk favourites The Wilderness of Manitoba, along with The Treasures, join the line-up.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 25 / TENNIS / HORSESHOE TAVERN / 368 QUEEN ST W / $11.50 / 19+
Tennis are a husband-and-wife duo from Denver, and their debut record Cape Dory is a definite must-buy. Be sure to visit Horseshoe Tavern on Friday night to listen to their effortless pop tunes, like "Take Me Somewhere", "Seafarer" and my personal favourite "Marathon". Experimental band Holiday Shores opens.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 26 / MOTORHEAD / KOOL HAUS / 132 QUEENS QUAY E / SOLD-OUT / 19+
Metal legends Motorhead rocks a sold-out Kool Haus on Saturday night. Their newest album The World is Yours dropped last December, and you can watch them perform the single "Get Back in Line" on Conan over at Rolling Stone. Join the Motorheadbangers on Saturday night and catch Clutch and Valient Thorr before the headliners hits the stage.

MONDAY FEBRUARY 28 / SMITH WESTERNS/ HORSESHOE TAVERN / 368 QUEEN ST W / $10 / 19+
I promise I don't have a bias toward Horseshoe Tavern but after already playing host to The Head and the Heart and Tennis last week, the venue begins a new week with one of the first bona fide buzz bands of 2011 - Smith Westerns. Their album Dye It Blonde has garnered heaps of praise from music writers, but these are young guys new to touring and only time will tell whether they have what it takes to become anything major. Give their album a spin and check out the video for "Weekend". And watch them live on Monday night supported by openers Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
