Ladies Bring a Little Warmth to Wavelength 399

After hibernating all weekend I decided to step out last night to catch Wavelength 399. Despite the bitter cold, there was a good-sized crowd out at Sneaky Dee's to catch two solid female-fronted bands.

First up was Calgary's Jane Vain & The Dark Matter, fronted by keyboardist Jamie Fooks. Her voice is frail and haunting, and her eclectic songs remind me of Radiohead mixed with The Doors and the best of the Cranberries. The band is at the tail end of a Canadian tour in support of their debut record Love Is Where The Smoke Is.

Next up was Toronto's own Megan Hamilton & The Volunteer Canola. After seeing her perform many times before, it was great hearing more psych-rock interpretations of her songs on the Wavelength stage. It might have been the amazing General Chaos visuals behind Megan and her band, but it felt like 1969 at times during their set.

This was the last installment of Wavelength's weekly series before its four-day, 8th Anniversary Festival starting this Thursday.
