Hot Ticket for the week of September 25 - October 1

Just a quick & dirty this week, because there is simply too much going on. Here are our picks for the week - click the links, have a listen, & choose for yourself:

Monday, Sept. 25 - Be Your Own Pet with Black Lips @ Horseshoe Tavern. The raunchy grimey Black Lips have been known to set themselves on fire and play guitar with their private parts, and BYOP defy most descriptions other than manic. $12.
Tuesday, Sept. 26 - Hmm. I got nothin. Although The Tom Waits Appreciation Society @ Silver Dollar and Mothra @ Bovine sound intriguing. Tom Waits. Mothra. Oh if only the real things got together...
Wednesday, Sept. 27 - High Lonesome Wednesdays with Crazy Strings @ the Silver Dollar. A little bluegrass & twang will get you over the mid-week hump quite nicely.
Thursday, Sept. 28 - Islands with Malajube @ the Opera House. Malajube cancelled their solo set at the Drake to hop on the Islands bill. Two bands for (just about) the price of one, and now it's all ages. $13.
Friday, Sept. 29 - Schoolly D @ Gypsy Co-op. How often do you get one of the pioneers of 80's hardcore/gangsta rap at a teeny tiny place like the Gypsy? Not often. Known for his explicit lyrics and hot hooks (like the vocal sample on Chemical Brother's hit "Block Rockin Beats"), Schoolly will be doing a performance and DJ set. $12 adv/$15 door.
Saturday, Sept. 30 - Ninja Highschool, Subtle, The Silent Years @ Sneaky Dee's. If you prefer bodyslamming dance-rap & drum beats to the whole artsy Nuit Blanche thing and you haven't seen Ninja Highschool yet - all you can ask yourself is what are you waiting for. $8.
Sunday, Oct. 1 - SEE VOUS PLAY: Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton, Joel Plaskett Emergency, Les Trois Accords & Les Breastfeeders @ the Kool Haus. Enough about Emily Haines already; to know Joel Plaskett is to love him. CBC Radio 3 free event (sold out, but hunt around and you may find something). If you're unsuccessful, Wavelength's offering of The Saffron Sect @ Sneaky Dee's is a groovy alternative.
