Culture Shock: Shawn Hewitt & National Strike
A while back I remember asking an Universal Music rep to categorize Shawn Hewitt's sound for me.
"He's different," the rep said. "But good different," he quickly added.
Checking out Culture Shock festival last night, I see where he's coming from. Despite a modest stage (Harbourfront Centre really needs to upgrade the Toronto Star stage) a modest crowd (which was a damn shame) and slightly chilly weather (which probably explains the crowd), Shawn Hewitt & National Strike bravely performed cuts off the recently released The Soft Society EP.
If I had to (and I don't mind you) describe the sound, I'd say the humble Toronto-based vocalist is an eclectic mix of rock, neo-soul, jazz and a whole lotta gumption.
He's good different.
