Morning Brew: Explosion at the CNE, Marineland has no "major issues," billionaire casino mogul lobbies Ford, renaming Yonge-Dundas Square, and a butter mayor
A close call at the CNE earlier this morning. According to CP24, a propane tank or generator exploded in an empty concession stand shortly before 4am, leaving a 50- to 60-metre debris field near Ontario Drive and Princess Boulevard. It's not clear why the tank exploded.
Marineland says no "major issues" arose from a joint inspection by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums at its Niagara Falls park, dismissing the eye issue in some animals as related to old age. The Star published reports earlier this week alleging some animals were suffering in poor living conditions.
More big name guests at City Hall. Yesterday, billionaire casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson - the chairman of Las Vegas Sands Corp. - met with Rob Ford to discuss building an entertainment complex somewhere in Toronto. According to the National Post, the pair spoke for about 45 minutes. Earlier this week Adelson and several other Las Vegas Sands executives registered as lobbyists at city hall.
The National Post is asking its readers to choose a new name for Yonge-Dundas Square, apparently because someone at the newspaper doesn't like the current descriptive name. On the ballot: "Sam's Square," "Toronto Common" and "Neil Young" square, among others. Jeepers. Toronto Common is currently out in front.
Finally, Olenka Kleban, a Toronto-based sculptor, has made a 230-kilo bust of Rob Ford entirely from butter. Currently on display in the Better Living Building at the CNE, the sculpture shows Ford reading a Margaret Atwood novel and leading on a steering wheel. No side order of gravy, though.
