Morning Brew: Boosting the street food menu, a Canada Day parade, examining helmet laws, fixing St. Clair's bottleneck, ferry line-ups, and Batman acrobatics
So that's that, the Ford radio show is on hiatus for the summer. The final show of the season yesterday focused on adding to the city's hot dog stand menus, something that ties in with a pet project of several other councillors who are hoping to foster street food culture in Toronto. Could this be a sign things are about to change?
During the same show, the Fords discussed starting a Canada Day parade next summer. Too bad the mayor won't be able to enjoy it - he'll be at the family cottage, right? Ford also confirmed he won't be available today for the official Pride flag raising.
Bike helmets have been back on the agenda the last few days since Ontario's chief coroner suggested making the safety devices mandatory for all cyclists. The Star looked at other Canadian cities and provinces with headgear laws to see how things are working out - seems like some riders in B.C. aren't enamored with their safety legislation.
If you can call any part of St. Clair Avenue a disaster it's surely the underpass under the Georgetown rail corridor. The notorious traffic bottleneck has been driving drivers to distraction since the private vehicle access was reduced to a single lane and a favorite shortcut was closed for construction. The new Downsview Park - complete with Toronto's newest lake - will open on the former site of Downsview military base next week. The National Post looked around the monkey bar and slide-free urban green space.
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Just a few months ago Toronto Batman was entertaining, delighting and frightening people in hi-res video - now he's doing the splits on Yonge street for camera phones. (via Reddit).
