Morning Brew: City surplus projected at $90 million, Rob Ford back on diet, does Toronto have a garbage bin shortage?, and let's talk about a DRL

We have ourselves a surplus on the horizon. So, what to do? Restore services or cut/reduce the land transfer tax? Or maybe that binary isn't the only way to think about this thing.

Just in case you care, Rob Ford does, indeed, plan on continuing with his Cut the Waist challenge.

There aren't too many reasons to read Metro online, but Matt Elliott's now regular columns are the exception to the rule. In his latest, he explains why our mayor is better suited to the role of city councillor — which, you know, isn't really such a good thing given the circumstances.

Does Toronto have a garbage bin shortage? Some people think so, but without information on bin numbers prior to our current street furniture contract with Astral Media, it's actually impossible to know.

If your name is Jeff and you live in Leslieville, I strongly suggest you read this. If you don't fit that description, behold the power of the Internet anyway. (via Reddit TO)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Anyone with even a cursory understanding of the city's transportation problems knows that the DRL is, or should be, Toronto's single most important infrastructure investment in the next half century.John Lorinc keeps his eye on the prize in diagnosing, once again, the failings of our mayor's transit program.
