Morning Brew: Sheppard subway debate to resume today, TDSB wants to cut 600 jobs, Billy Bishop terminal hauled away, and Raptors lose to Bulls
So, that was pretty anticlimactic. After a full day of debate yesterday on Toronto's transit future, Rob Ford and Co. managed to end the proceedings (no doubt because it wasn't going their way) before a final vote could be made. Ford tried to have the meeting delayed until April 4, but was denied, so now the crucial vote will be made (hopefully) sometime today.
The Toronto District School Board is considering slashing up to 600 positions, which would include high school teachers, vice principals, and office staff, in order to deal with their $85-million deficit. The report on the cuts is expected to be presented to the full board next week. If passed, the cuts will be put into effect in September 2012.
Thanks to this extra warm spring we're having, more people are venturing to the city's beaches but don't be surprised if you don't find them particularly well manicured. The city only has a few permanent workers to deal with the increased volume before the annual spring clean up happens in late April. Seasonal workers will begin in a few weeks, so until then, don't mind the litter and the leaves.
Well, this isn't good. A Toronto couple was accidentally mailed sensitive documents from Service Canada that included record of employment forms and social insurance numbers belonging to about 30 people. Those postal codes sure can be pesky.
You don't see this everyday. Billy Bishop Airport's original terminal from 1939 was hauled away on a trailer to make way for the entrance to the new pedestrian tunnel. The Grid has pics of the ordeal.
