Morning Brew: One mystery of the MLG time capsule is solved, the Rob Ford "they want subways" remix, more on the Eglinton Crosstown, and Leafs lose to Penguins in shootout
Thanks to the sleuthing of a Toronto librarian, one of the mysteries of the Maple Leafs Gardens time capsule has been solved. The handmade copper carries the quizzical inscription: "M.B. Campbell 124 Lindsay Ave 9/21/31." Turns out "M.B." was Millard Breuls Campbell, a young draftsman, who worked at the Gardens in 1931 and who had a thing for making metal boxes. Phew. Glad we can put that thing to rest. Now we just need to find out what that little ivory elephant means.
So what's the meaning of those scary-looking prisms precariously hanging above us while we walk in the Eaton Centre? The Grid tells us that the $2.5-million art installation called "Slipstream" and is described as giving "sense of flight and aerodynamics, expressing the movement of the sky above to viewers below." They also light up at night.
After Rob Ford's emphatic use of the of the phrase "they want subways", Torontoist thought it might make a nice little remix. The ditty actually makes Ford sound rather earnest (and a little like Owl City).
Spacing has dug up some pretty surprising news about the Eglinton LRT. John Lorinc explains that "while Metrolinx has conducted so-called "benefits case analyses" on several other of its undertakings, Spacing has learned that the agency didn't apply this kind of rigour to the Crosstown, even though it officially ranks as Canada's most expensive infrastructure project."
