Morning Brew: Lots of casino talk, Rob Ford's most inspirational speech ever, Waterfront Toronto wants its LRT, gift card thief, and Leafs lose to Flames
Looks like when it comes to having a casino in Toronto, it's a downtown versus the suburbs battle. Yesterday, councillor Adam Vaughan's proposal to change zoning rules to prohibit casinos in his ward was unanimously supported by council from the former city of Toronto and East York. Meanwhile, at another civic meeting, Scarborough councillors endorsed the pursuit of a casino. The province has the final say in the matter anyway, but who's right on this one?
The best, and probably most inspirational, speech Rob Ford has ever given was at a high school assembly earlier this month where he told a group of students that "education is the lightest luggage" and "talk is cheap...[so] just stick to your goal and do it."
The LRT project meant to connect Union Station with Queens Quay East that was promised a year and a half ago has stalled and now Waterfront Toronto needs $272 million to make it happen. Hundreds of millions of dollars have already been invested into the area under the assumption that the LRT would soon follow. With budget constraints, apparently the city and the TTC are seeking "creative solutions" to address the issue.
Wondering what happened to that gift card your great-aunt Rose assured you was on its way at Christmas time? Turns out it was most likely stolen by a female Canada Post worker, who was arrested and charged. Police are reminding us to not send money through the mail.
