Morning Brew: Union Station to be next gem in city skyline, Mammoliti suggests cutting council in half, and a course on TTC station design
The Union Station renovation project is aiming to be the next big thing in Toronto's skyline. Though commuters will have to continue putting up with the annoying construction until 2015, the new $50-million atrium sounds like it will be worth the wait. Designed by Zeidler Partnership Architects senior partner Tarek El-Khatib and his team, the 70,000-square-foot atrium of steel and glass apparently will "float like a luminous cloud" 50 feet over the train tracks.
Whether you love or hate the Entertainment District, Klub Max is to blame. In the late '80s, Nick Di Donato and his Liberty Entertainment Group renovated the old George Crookshank House that was built in the 1830s and turned it into the district's first full-on, multi-level dance club, which opened in 1990. Oh, and just in case you were wondering: the Crookshank house was a designated historical site. But, we don't care much about those things, right?
Is Giorgio Mammoliti a sore loser? Well, you be the judge. Just days after city council had voted to reverse $19 million in proposed service cuts to the 2012 budget, Mammoliti has proposed to introduce a motion to halve the size of council to 22 members. Is it poor sportsmanship or does the suggestion come from the mayor's election platform to shrink council size? Or does Mamms really want to expedite the decision-making process?
If you're interested in TTC station design, the above video will make you happy. Although the narration seems designed to lull the viewer to sleep, some of the insights during the second half are pretty interesting.
