Morning Brew: The Eglinton Crosstown is Canada's most expensive infrastructure project, brave souls take the polar bear plunge, pinhole camera project reveals dreamy skyline, riding the Blue Night, Raps lose again
According to the cleverly-named infrastructure magazine, ReNew Canada, Rob Ford's decision to move the Eglinton light rail line underground has made the project the costliest infrastructure project in the country at an estimated $8.2-billion. The projects are ranked based on total costs, including materials and labour. Another Toronto project to make the list? The Spadina subway extension comes in at number 8 with a $2.63-billion price tag.
These brave souls never cease to amaze me. Across the country yesterday, polar bear dips - where people willingly dip, frolic or dive into frigid water on New Year's Day - raised money for various charities. In Toronto, the water was a cool 4 C when local "polar bears" took the plunge at Sunnyside Beach. Organizers there were hoping to raise $40,000 for Habitat for Humanity. Now that's one way to shake off a hang-over.
Could this be Toronto's dreamiest image? Quite possibly. Last year, photographer Michael Christman placed a pinhole camera in the Port Lands, aiming it at the city's skyline, for 365 days. Over the last year, light slowly crept through the pinhole, building an exposure on a piece of photosensitive paper, kind of like a time-lapse painting. Chrisman retrieved his camera New Year's Eve Day and the results are really something special.
Not many of us have experienced the TTC's Blue Night transit system (well, maybe not sober). For a few nights, NOW's Ben Spurr hitched a ride on what's typically known as the Vomit Comet and experienced a whole other side of Toronto in the twilight hours.
