Morning Brew: No lockout for now, salting our roads, Retrontario get its own website, and SIU won't reopen Nobody case

That's a relief — for now. According to deputy mayor Doug Holyday, there City won't lockout CUPE 416 workers when bargaining deadline passes on February 5th. Last Friday, the City said it would not continue talks with CUPE's Local 416 past the February 5 lockout date, igniting fears that our arenas and other city facilities would be affected starting next Monday. Holyday isn't ruling out the possibility of a lockout at some point further down the road.

In case you missed it: at his weekly weigh-in yesterday Rob Ford seemed to go for the record of how many times a person could say "subways" in 30 seconds, and then he went onto say he wasn't really elected or something.

There are more than a few concerns when it comes to salting our streets for the winter. Not only does the salt sting poor Fido's paws, but road salt corrodes asphalt and steel, causing our infrastructure to be replaced or repaired more often. It's also polluting our rivers. The city is open to trying out new methods, but alternatives like beet juice and potassium acetate are just too expensive.

Oh, cool! Thanks to YouTube's annoying copyright and licensing laws, Retrontario now has its own website. Now we can stroll down memory lane while watching old Woolco commercials and perusing vintage TVO ads conveniently at one place. In light of this good news, let's have a look at one of the all-time gems that Ed Conroy has dug up.
