At a budget committee meeting yesterday, Chief Bill Blair admitted there are too many officers on duty at certain times of the day. With a ten-hour night shift and an eight-hour midnight shift overlapping, that means every 24 hours police are being paid for 28 hours of work. Blair admits the overlap is an "obvious inefficiency."
That 'inefficiency' might explain why councillor Peter Milczyn tabled a motion to cut an additional $4.3-million from the proposed $933.7-million Toronto Police Services budget after Blair's meeting concluded. Though Milczyn specified the cuts could come from the force's civilian staff - which really wouldn't help with the shift overlap inefficiency...
