Morning Brew: Traffic woes to worsen with Eglinton LRT construction, TDSB votes for Africentric high school, 20% of 311 calls go unanswered, and why the Leafs shouldn't be sold to Americans
Drivers will soon have to contend with even more gridlock thanks to the new Eglinton LRT. During its construction, city officials may close some or all of the south end of the Allen Expressway, and Eglinton will also be reduced to one lane each way. Because of the complexity of the project, construction is expected to take up to five years. Yeah, it's going to suck for a very long time. I guess it's to be expected though.
The Toronto District School Board voted yesterday to establish an Africentric high school. The vote didn't come easy. Emotions ran high as some trustees advocated the curriculum, and others argued that it's just a Band-Aid solution for a larger problem in the school system. Toronto city councillor Josh Matlow, an opponent of the school, later tweeted, while "done with the best of intentions," it is "very wrong for our city and society." As of yet, the location for the the school has yet to be determined.
This is helpful. According to the city's auditor general, about 20% of the city's 311 calls go unanswered, as well as one in ten callers wait three minutes before being answered. So that explains missed garbage collections, litter or pothole problems.
So what happens to downtown buildings after a major fire? Well, not much, apparently. The Grid runs down a list of notable building fires in the city, and while a couple have been restored, many of the buildings remain vacant, fenced off, or demolished.
