Morning Brew: Police Chief gets an increase in budget after all, don't be ashamed to be a Leafs fan, Krista Ford quits LFL, historic house goes up in flames, and TTC approves random drug testing
Only three weeks after Police Chief Bill Blair played hardball with the city's request for a 10 per cent budgetary decrease, there seems to have beeen something of a compromise made (even though it looks like the chief still got his way). In the new proposal, Blair proposes an increase of 0.6 per cent rather than his initial 1.5 per cent, and it looks like the board is going to accept it. As councillor Adam Vaughan puts it: "So much for 'staying the course."
Do you sometimes feel silly for cheering on the Leafs? Well, according to The Grid's Edward Keenan, you shouldn't. Even though the Buds have yet to win the Cup for what seems like eons, Keenan argues there's something extraordinary about our loyalty and determination to keep hoping and dreaming, which he thinks defines us as citizens too. Eat your heart out, Stephen Marche.
Well, this is a shame. Krista Ford is no longer a part of Toronto Triumph. Following a shake up of the team, Ford and several of her teammates have left the scantily-clad football team based on â what else? â morals. Ford posted the following on her Facebook page yesterday: "I had to stand up for what I felt was right. Unfortunately, it cost me the greatest sport in the world." Whatever that means.
Now this is a real shame. Yet another one of the city's heritage buildings has gone up in flames. Last night, a vacant heritage home on George Street, once owned by the William Goodherham family, was destroyed by fire. It's too early to tell if the cause of the fire was suspicious or not.
