Morning Brew: Toronto firefighters hit back with a new website, PWC delays vote on road closures for Ironman race, family of daughter killed in TTC bus crash to sue, Rob Ford will attend environmental day, strike rally planned at George Brown
Toronto's firefighters are fighting fire with fire when it comes to saving their jobs. The Toronto firefighters' union has set up a website that plainly says they're "not gravy" and will be delivering flyers door-to-door across the city to spread the word that a decrease in firefighters will increase response times, and basically we're going to be playing Russian roulette with our lives.
The family of the woman who was killed in last week's crash that involved a TTC bus and a crane truck intends to sue the TTC and both drivers. In their first media appearance since the death of their daughter, the family urged other TTC drivers "to be careful and responsible." Police haven't yet charged the driver of the TTC bus, though marijuana was allegedly found on his person at the time of the crash.
Along with putting the Yonge and Dundas scramble crossing under review, the Public Works Committee's decision to put off a vote on closures of the DVP and Gardiner Expressway for an Ironman race to be held next summer. Is this the first sign that the City's going to reduce such highway-closing events in the future?
Well, it's no Pride parade, but Rob Ford will be attending a community environmental day at Colonel Danforth Park this evening, though his attendance is bittersweet: community environment days were on the list to be scrapped in order to cut costs. Getting rid of them would save the city $500,000.
