Morning Brew: Labour Day parade to honour Jack Layton, Toronto firefighters fighting to save their jobs, Doug Ford an ideas man?, Ontario Liberal platform leaked, and jogger hit by TTC bus
Thousands are expected to attend the annual Labour Day March this morning, which seems to be more prevalent than ever with the recent cuts and privatization to city services. The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Queen Street and University Avenue, and will wrap up at the CNE grounds around 2:30 p.m. Not only will this year's parade celebrate workers, but it will also honour Jack Layton.
The Globe and Mail has a fitting piece this Labour Day morning on the new fight Toronto firefighters have on their hands now â the fight to save their jobs. In the coming weeks, firefighters will soon have to justify a job in which many consider an essential service when Rob Ford announces the sweeping cuts needed to help deflate the city's massive budget deficit. The argument: firefighters are fighting less fires and more medical emergencies; in fact, they are required at only one percent of the calls they attend. Firefighters say the one per cent represents 1,000 lives saved, so what means more?
Here's an interesting spin: Doug Ford, Idea Man? Well, the National Post is throwing that one out there. Sure he gets a lot of flak for his outlandish (or would that be 'Portland-ish?) ideas, but at least he's thinking. Or something like that.
The platform of the provincial Liberals was leaked yesterday revealing a number of policies, including one that promises an all-day GO train. That's right. No more "on the hour" waiting, GTA residents could be taking that train whenever they darn well please. Of course the leak isn't approved by the Liberals (even though it was probably done by one of them), and many think the policies, which include a tax credit for employers who hire immigrants, aren't very sexy either.
