Morning Brew: Mischief charges for man who threatened Rob Ford, concrete falls from building on Gerrard, McGuinty promises students more time to pay back loans, lots of Wongs in Toronto, and St. Lawrence Centre theatre workers locked out
As if threatening Rob Ford's life last week wasn't enough, now it seems the same man is targeting (or maybe supporting?) Jack Layton and the NDP. Robert Dunlop was charged with mischief and threat after graffiti, including the words "Jack Layton" and "NDP," were discovered in the Bloor and Dundas Street W. area. Of course, this could also be another slight against Ford since we all know how the mayor feels about graffiti.
If it's not glass falling from a downtown building, it's concrete. Last night chunks of concrete fell from the building at 111 Gerrard Street East, which houses a Ryerson University copy centre. No injuries were reported.
Premier Dalton McGuinty is targeting the youth vote it seems. McGuinty said, if his party was reelected, he would double the payback period for student loans in exchange for working a nonprofit job. Sounds good, except for the fact that you would hardly make enough to cover your loans at a nonprofit job anyway.
There's a lot of Wongs in Toronto. As many of 500 people, all with the last name Wong, gathered outside of Queen's Park on Saturday, followed by a dinner in Mississauga where more than 1,000 Wongs were expected, all as part of the Wong National Convention. To mark the occasion, the Canadian Heraldic Authority granted Wongs their own family coat of arms last week. Apparently there are over 14,000 Wong listed in Canada and over 3,000 in Toronto.
