Morning Brew: another heat alert, dry cleaners get no relief, Chinatown boozecan shut down, new owners for the Great Hall, bullet riddled car found on Lake Shore
It's going to be another scorcher today. Toronto has been placed under its sixth heat alert of the season, with the humidex expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius. By now, this is old hat for us; however, it still should be said that drinking plenty of liquids and seeking cool places to literally chill are musts today.
The adage "out with the old, in with the new" apparently extends to the city's trees. Seems that some arborists assume just because a tree is ugly and old, it should be cut down and replaced with a younger tree. However, with this summer's extreme heat, some young trees are prematurely dying, which could impact Toronto's future urban landscape. Older trees, on the other hand, can handle the pressure, but alas, are not being saved.
When you're seeking relief somewhere with A.C. today, remember your dry cleaner. Just like the Schneiders, who own Boyd Cleaners on Dovercourt and Bloor, they'll be trapped in a hot room all day, steaming your pleats and working on your wine stains. Joe Schneider says working conditions feel like "turning the furnace on in the summertime." So maybe those shirts don't have to be starched right away.
This week's Political Panel from the National Post discusses what (if anything) has been accomplished from last week's marathon session at city hall. There's a suggestion that an anti-Ford mainstream movement was born, albeit small, and that it could get even larger once actual cuts are made.
