Morning Brew: SIU rules police didn't use excessive force in G20 case, Bathurst station named most romantic in the city, Audit Committee to review our huge debt, nudist goes on trial today, and the Jays beat the Red Sox
After closing and then reopening the case, and then tracking down and interviewing police and RCMP officers from across the country, the Special Investigations Unit has finally ruled that police did not use excessive force when they arrested Joseph Thomson whose nose was broken at protests for last summer's G20 summit. In addition to using video that was taken at the time of the arrest, the SIU determined police had the authority to arrest Thomson and use reasonable force, but couldn't find evidence they were responsible for his injuries.
Turns out those Craigslist's "Missed Connections" are the real deal, especially if you're looking for love at the Bathurst Station. Craigslist researchers have determined through their TRIST (train romance index score total) scale - yes, this is a real thing - which analyses their "Missed Connections" ads over the course of a year, that Bathurst is considered the third most romantic in the country. It trails behind two lovey-dovey Montreal stations (but they are French). Back in November, Bathurst was considered the most romantic station in Toronto. So, singletons, it seems like you know where to go for some summer lovin'.
So when it comes to debt, it seems we can play ball with the Grecians. The city's financial statements for last year are on today's agenda for the City's audit committee and it's not very pretty. Consolidated statements say the city's debt sits at $2.89 billion from last year, with a significant amount coming from TTC vehicle purchases by former mayor David Miller.
Public nudity is going to get all kinds of exposure today when its criminality will be argued at a Toronto court. A man is on trial for being nude at a Bracebridge fast food restaurant, and his lawyers are arguing that public nudity shouldn't automatically be deemed a criminal offense. I'm no prude, but nudity at a fast food joint? That's just ugly-naked, isn't it?
