Morning Brew: Queen's Park welcomes 30 new Canadians, councillor John Parker tweets about another hot chick, Rocco Rossi introduces defibrillators to subway stations, and the Argos beat the Stampeders
In honour of our country's 144th birthday yesterday, thirty new Canadians from 27 countries took the oath of citizenship at Queen's Park. They join the long list of 165,000 newcomers who have been granted citizenship in Ontario over the last two years. Citizenship Judge Raminder Gill, who helped preside over the proceedings, said, "We want [our citizens] to celebrate our diversity and that is what Canada gives us the opportunity ... we can be individuals but we can be all Canadians."
City councillor John Parker ran his "tweet" off again. Last week it was his "hot chicks" comment, and now Parker has called another woman "hot" via Twitter. This time it was Mary Lou Fallis, a musical comedienne, who was recently named to the Order of Canada. Parker tweeted that Fallis was "seriously hot" - though he did add she had a sense of humour, too. No word if Mayor Rob Ford is going to ask Parker to apologize for this tweet, but, seriously, this guy's gotta get a girlfriend or something.
Now defibrillators can be found in six subway stations in the city, thanks to Rocco Rossi. The former CEO of Ontario's Heart and Stroke Foundation raised nearly $60,000 in the last two years to help implement the public defibrillators. 7,000 people suffer cardiac arrests annually in Ontario and their survival rate shoots up 75 per cent with the help of a defibrillator. I guess the trick is being in one of those six subway stations.
