Morning Brew: City to change graffiti bylaw, artists want to add colour and flair to dismal streets, Ducks delay the TTC, Catholic School Board spends $900k for overhaul, and the Jays beat Reds
All of this graffiti clean-up controversy has forced the city's council committee for licensing and standards to release a list of recommendations within days, in hopes of diffusing the backlash. The new bylaw will be introduced June 29 and the city hopes it will help balance what is considered art and what is considered graffiti.
In the meantime, while the city figures out graffiti issues, two local artists want to add some colour and flair to the city's concrete buildings and dismal streets to make city life more joyful. Robert Wigington and Christopher Dew recently formed 66 Ideas Inc. and one of their dreams is to convert the faรงade of the Bay/Marriott complex into an epic interpretation of a Hudson Bay blanket using paint or a video projection. They'd also like to close Yonge Street for the day and create the world's largest chalk drawing.
Why did a family of ducks cross the Scarborough Rapid Transit tracks? Probably to get to the other side, and luckily they made it, thanks to a quick-thinking and eagle-eyed TTC operator who halted the morning commute for 10-15 minutes until the ducks safely crossed.
