Morning Brew: Budget chief is missing his piggy bank, crisis phones coming to the TTC, Toronto unlikely to get a second NHL team, and congrats to Tomas Kaberle

How fitting is this? Toronto police are investigating the disappearance of a small, red piggy bank belonging to the city's budget chief, Mike del Grande. Apparently the piggy went missing sometime Wednesday afternoon during a lengthy city council meeting. "Whoever took my pig, give it back," Del Grande demanded the council. Councillor David Shiner, also pleading for the piggy's safe return, said: "[del Grande] was saving very hard for our budget with that pig and it's hard to balance the budget without it. It definitely was a member of council that may have been asked to collude with it and hide it somewhere." You can't even make this stuff up.

City council had even more important topics to discuss yesterday, like the call for a second Toronto NHL team. Councillor Josh Colle argued his motion was a good economic call for the city and wouldn't hurt the Leafs at all, while councillor Anthony Perruzza welcomed another team in spite of the Leafs. "Just watching [the Leafs] implode year in and year out, I believe we are doing a disservice to Torontonians," he said. However, most councillors pledged their faithful allegiance to Leafs Nation and the motion was struck down.

Beginning Thursday, the TTC will implement a series of signs and phones in order to prevent suicide - the first of their kind in North America. The phones will link to a local crisis line operated with Distress Centres of Toronto and will be available during all hours that the TTC is open. It's the first time "suicide" has been used in subway advertising. Bloor-Yonge and Wellesley stations will have the first phones and signage; the others will be equipped by the end of July.

And...let us offer congratulations to ex-Leaf Tomas Kaberle, who joins a long list pf players who have left the team to go on to win the Stanley Cup. Now what about those riots? That's classy.
