Morning Brew: Underpass Park gets underway next month, frustration at Oakwood Collegiate, Ontario's deficit is lower than expected, Toronto's place in the federal election, and Arcade Fire wins big at the Junos
The land beneath Richmond and Adelaide Streets, just west of the Don Valley Parkway, which once could have easily been used as a backdrop for a dystopian film, is getting a make-over. Next month, construction will begin for Underpass Park, a heavily landscaped area underneath the pair of busy roadways. Announced last year, the park will feature moveable coffee kiosks, public basketball courts and public art hung from the highway itself. Sure beats pigeon coops.
This would be frustrating for some students. Apparently, the community of Oakwood Collegiate were not consulted before the Toronto District School Board announced their school could become the first Africentric high school in the city. Most parents and students learned about the proposal through media reports and a courtesy automated phone call directing them to the school's website. That's better than receiving a piece of paper that had a habit of not making it home. Anyway, the proposal goes before a committee on Wednesday and a decision could be made as early as April 13th.
I guess this is good news. Ontario's economy isn't too shabby with the recent announcement that our deficit is $3-billion lower than expected. In Tuesday's budget, the government will announce a deficit of $16.7-billion for the fiscal year, which is helped by the province's curbing of program spending.
The National Post's political panel discusses Toronto's place in the recently-announced federal election. Maybe there won't be as much attention to Toronto politics for the next little while (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), they say that Toronto won't be totally irrelevant for the next month.
