Ford Nation

Morning Brew: Ford Nation the next Tea Party?, Queen's Park says no to Freedom Festival, how to live life by the sword, and Air Canada to fly out of Toronto Island Airport

If you thought "Ford Nation" was an idle threat given by our mayor to the premier, think again. Apparently it's just the beginning. Members of Rob Ford's former campaign staff have been quietly drawing up plans to form a right-wing advocacy group, with the intention of monetizing and organizing the huge voting base, not unlike the Tea Party in the U.S. The upside is that it won't be called Ford Nation but instead the Respect for Taxpayers Action Group, which is obviously much better.

This is a shame. Two dogs were shocked and killed, and another was injured along with a police officer, from defective equipment on a TTC pole at Queen and Parliament Streets. TTC spokesman Brad Ross said that a "span wire," which supports the live streetcar wires and is not supposed to be electrified, somehow became energized and shot electricity down the pole to the sidewalk. The investigation is ongoing.

Imagine the streets filled with hungry, thirsty, and totally ripped people. And no, I'm not referring to a typical Saturday night. This is the scene organizers of Toronto's Freedom Festival, a marijuana-loving celebration, is threatening the city with if they don't change their decision to withhold a permit that allows the group to use the lawn at Queen's Park. In the four years since it debuted, the festival has become even more popular, regularly pulling in crowds of between 10,000 and 40,000 people, which is what contributed to its permit denial.

Do you want to live life by the sword? Who doesn't. In its third installment of its weekly strange how-to's, the National Post dissects the Society for Creative Anachronism, which is basically Medieval Times for amateurs.
