Morning Brew: Toronto Police don't want more cops, Cherry to hang chain around Ford, no left turn at Belmont, bells return to the Eaton Centre
The Toronto Police Service and Rob Ford aren't on the same page. Remember when the new Mayor promised during his campaign that he'd find the cash to hire 100 more cops? Turns out he made the pledge without asking the service, union or its board whether more officers were actually needed. Sounds a bit like the whole helicopter ordeal. "Part of the difficulty is the chief hasn't had any discussions with the mayor yet," said Chief Bill Blair's spokesman, Mark Pugash.
Also from the Star, columnist Joe Fiorito says hockey commentator Don Cherry has no place at today's meeting of city council where he's scheduled to hang the ceremonial chain around Ford's neck. City services have painted over the left hand turn lane at Davenport and Belmont. It's true. Coming south on Davenport, the familiar short-cut to Yonge and Rosedale Valley Road is no longer an option. Local residents petitioned for reduced traffic on what is basically a narrow residential street and won. And now motorists are mad. The bad news? 10,000 vehicles are still estimated to travel along Belmont Street each weekday, down from 13,000. Apparently only 3,000 of the cars turned left from Davenport.
