Morning Brew: Toronto garbage will no longer be shipped to Michigan, the mayor talks 2011, changes in store for Toronto scenery, police pick the dumbest criminal, and some sporting eye-candy
Later today, Toronto's last truck of waste will head to a Michigan-based landfill. Due to increased recycling efforts and the use of the Green Lane landfill in London, the 70 or so trucks being sent out currently will all remain in Ontario. We started using the Michigan for waste disposal in 1998 and by 2003 we were sending 140 trucks stateside per day.
The Post sat down for a chat with Rob Ford the main topic of which was his goals and plans for 2011. My favourite sequence: Q: "Are you in favour of using up the surplus and the reserves in order to give residents a zero per cent tax increase?" A: However we can achieve it, that's up to staff. Staff are the professionals on that. However we can achieve the zero per cent tax increase, if it is using the surplus and the reserves, because people need some breathing space. People have been taxed to death in this city for too long." Ford supporters may get upset that I'm calling him on this, but you'd think the guy in charge would understand the strategy, even if it's just a matter of being properly prepped for the interview.
The Star does the looking-ahead-to-2011 as well in putting together a list of revitalization and building projects that should change the city's scenery. One question, though. Since when is Mississauga Toronto? Renovations to Square One are fine and dandy, but my Toronto doesn't include the Sauga.
So, just to make sure I'm as hypocritical as possible, this next bit of news comes to us from Chatham, Ontario -- hey, at least I don't claim it's Toronto -- where police have selected the dumbest criminal of the year. The winning candidate phone police to complain that the media had done a sloppy job reporting on his crime, and therein gave himself away.
