Morning Brew: Rob Ford against gun registry, more pedestrian accidents, don't trust the polls, bomb scare on Porter flight, Port Lands arena complex approved
Everyone but Rob Ford supports the gun registry (though he does support the idea of a handgun ban except for police officers). But I'm not sure the gun registry has been all that helpful, since Sunday 10 men have been shot, one fatally. Luckily, all the shooters were quickly apprehended because they registered their guns under "for criminal intent"... not.
The carnage doesn't end there unfortunately. Within a span of 13-hours one woman is dead and two pedestrians were injured in three separate vehicle-to-pedestrian collisions yesterday. Over the last week, there's been a string of similar incidents including two involving TTC vehicles.
The Star offers a timely reminder that all the early polls in relation to the upcoming municipal election must be taken with a grain of salt. Back in 2003, current Mayor David Miller trailed Barbara Hall by a huge margin heading into September. As David Crombie said in our interview with him about the race, "the election will begin shortly after Labour Day.... So any polls now are pretty wild."
A Porter Airlines flight to Chicago was delayed after a flight attendant overheard the words "pipe bomb." Police, the marine Police, and the Emergency Task Force were all deployed and searched the plane to uncover... absolutely nothing. One man was taken into custody for questioning but was released without charges. Perhaps, there was a good context for his choice of words? Nevertheless, one can never be too careful now that alleged terrorists are appearing on Canadian Idol.
Despite cost-issues, the 8-story ice-rink complex in the Port Lands is a go. It was approved 22-17 on Thursday evening. The structure will cost $88-million, of which the city has about two-thirds of at the moment, but there's hope that they'll find the other $27-million somewhere. Yep, somewhere out there...
