This Week in Rep Cinema features second-run and classic film selections from cinemas such as the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, The Fox, The Revue, The Royal, the Projection Booth, TIFF Bell Lightbox, and more.

I have to say I'm a bit surprised: it's October and the only evident hint that Halloween is around the corner is a lecture series about zombies! I'm not expecting movie-madness yet, but would it kill cinemas to show a screening of Halloween or something? Looks like you'll just have to settle for the multiple Malkovich scene in Being John Malkovich. Otherwise, short films get their dues at Shorts That are Not Pants, music videos hit the digital age (with the help of YouTube) at Packaged Goods and Oslo, August 31 reminds us that Scandinavian cinema simply rules.

TUESDAY OCTOBER 9 / GUT RENOVATION / THE ROYAL CINEMA / 7PM
Co-presented by Coach House Press and the Images Film Festival, Gut Renovation is Sue Friedrich's very personal and very universal story of the gentrification of Williamsburg. When the neighbourhood was rezoned for development, luxury high-rises moved in, and influential artist enclaves and neighbourhoods were torn down. The screening will be followed by a discussion on the subject of, "How can we make gentrification work for the arts community?" Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online or at the cinema.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 10 / PACKAGED GOODS: THE EVOLUTION OF THE MUSIC VIDEO / TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX / 7PM
This month, TIFF's Packaged Goods screening focuses on the modern-day music video. Those who grew up with MTV and MuchMusic recall when music videos suddenly all became short films in the late nineties, but the internet generation requires a more interactive product. From Blink 182's fan-content compendium Up All Night, to Gotye's Somebodies cover-mashup and even Psy's Gangnam Style, the purpose of the music video is ever-shifting. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the cinema.

THURSDAY OCTOBER 11 / SHORTS THAT ARE NOT PANTS / CARLTON CINEMA / 7PM
James McNally's quarterly film screening dedicated to all films short and small is a welcome addition to the listings this week. After the unfortunate news that the Canadian Film Centre has put the monthly World of Shorts program on an indefinite hiatus, in addition to the NFB Mediatheque closing in September, it's increasingly difficult to find shorts programmes right now. Come for the world premiere of The Cub but definitely stay for Foxes.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 12 / BEING JOHN MALKOVICH / INNIS TOWN HALL / 7PM
CINSSU's Free Friday Films are back with a mind-bender this week, as Charlie Kaufman's genius is splashed across the screen over at Innis Town Hall. Being John Malkovich was the first of many brilliant scripts from Kaufman that had audiences on the edge of their seat, and it didn't hurt that the first director to take on his work was Spike Jonze. A self-referential exploration into the mind of a celebrity, through the eyes of said celebrity? Yes, please!

SATURDAY OCTOBER 13 / OSLO, AUGUST 31 / PROJECTION BOOTH EAST / 7PM
Drug addition and twenty-first century aimlessness is front and centre in this Norwegian film about Anders, a 34-year-old with nothing to his name but strained relationships with family and friends, and his tenuous grasp on sobriety. When he's released from rehab for the day, with the task of attending a job interview, Anders takes the opportunity to find old friends and acquaintances instead, and struggling with past demons. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the cinema.
