This Week in Rep Cinema features second-run and classic film selections from cinemas such as the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, The Fox, The Revue, The Royal, Toronto Underground Cinema, the Projection Booth, TIFF Bell Lightbox, and more.

While TIFF has almost completely taken the city by storm, there are a few refuges where you can see some good cinema without the retina-burning orange volunteer shirts or the clipboard/headset crew. Also? Save your wallet because none of this week's selections are over $10 and two are free!

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 11 / COSMOPOLIS / THE ROYAL / 9PM
Skip the TIFF limelight and see David Cronenberg's most recent work, Cosmopolis. An adaptation of the book by the same name, it centres upon a young, drone-like billionaire Eric Packer who has the emotional depth of a teaspoon, as he spends a good portion of his day living vicariously in his limousine on the way to find a barber. Paranoia about threats real and imagined infect his routine until he follows a rabbit hole he should've left clearly alone. Twihards will have a hard time reconciling the Robert Pattinson they are familiar with, to this cold and calculating shell of a man. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the cinema.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 14 / CARNAGE / INNIS TOWN HALL / 7PM
The Cinema Studies Student Union launches their Free Friday Films series this fall with Polanski's surprisingly well-received adaptation, Carnage. Based off of a French play, God of Carnage, the story revolves around two sets of parents settling a dispute between their children. The "victim's" parents are haughty, expectant and overly friendly while the "assailant's" are wary and icy. As the two couples test their boundaries and lose civility, their conflict and tension hits a breaking point. A fantastic ensemble piece. Admission is free.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 15 / POLISH SHORTS / REVUE CINEMA / 2PM & 4PM
Couldn't get a ticket to any of the Short Cuts Canada screenings this year? There's a free solution to that! The Revue Cinema joins the party this weekend during the Roncesvalles Polish Festival, featuring a collection of short Polish films both days of the festival. Pop by on Saturday or Sunday, stay for a few or watch them all!

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 16 / SUNSET BOULEVARD / CINEPLEX THEATRES / 12:45PM
Movie stars these days ain't got nothing on Gloria Swanson's deliciously batty turn in Sunset Boulevard. Skip the TIFF Closing Party red carpet and snuggle up to a tale of a faded star, her delusions and the screenwriter who tempted her with the thought of one last role to cling on to. The film highlights the decadent luxury enjoyed by the Hollywood elite while also revealing the filmier details that are better left unexposed. William Holden is also formidable in his role as the hapless writer sucked into the black widow's web. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the cinema.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 16 / NIGHT OF THE COMET & THE LAST WALTZ / TORONTO UNDERGROUND CINEMA / 6:30PM & 9PM
We say goodbye to a great rep cinema this week as the Toronto Underground Cinema breathes its last breath (for now at least) with a double bill that exemplifies what made the cinema great in the first place. Starting at 6:30 is Night of the Comet, a horror film about a pair of Valley Girls left to defend the planet from zombies, it's almost like a Christopher Pike novel come to life. Closing off the night is The Last Waltz, Martin Scorsese's mythic concert documentary about The Band, featuring exhilarating performances by a myriad of performers playing along with them. Tickets for the double bill are $5 and can be purchased at the cinema.
